Time to skidaddle.  These little guys are quite brazen.  Another time, Jerri heard rustling in my backpack and it was one of these squirrels trying to find food.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/squirrel.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Squirrel</image:title><image:caption>

This varmint visited us and wondered if we had any Grey Poupon or crackers. Check out the rugged mountain in the background.  Smoke from forest fires to the south of us was creeping in here.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/j-paddling.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>J paddling</image:title><image:caption>

But one must be careful because just past that big rock in the background is a long waterfall and a huge drop to even bigger rocks. No bueno to slip over the edge. We were able to to enjoy all this in solitude for about 20 minutes before people began to join us. Good thing we like to get out early.

A pothole is a circular or cylindrical hole in the riverbed which is produced by force of water and abrasion. A pothole is formed when a circular current of water carrying small pebbles and sediment begins to wear away a rock surface.

You have to traverse a long dirt road through a pasture to get to the Dangberg Home Ranch and along the way you might be greeted by an attentive bossy.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/lillian-virgin.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Lillian Virgin Finnegan</image:title><image:caption>An early Genoa mover and shaker was Lillian Virgin Finnegan.  When she decided Genoa needed some street lights, she organized the Candy Dance (a dance and midnight super featuring her candy) to raise money for the town.  This is still an annual event a century later.  AND the town of Genoa still uses that money to help run the town’s affairs.  Her signature candy was fudge, but here she might be serving divinity or white chocolate fudge. http://www.genoanevada.org/candydancefaire.htm

We dreamed about swimming almost every day with the honu and its fellow creatures of the deep. Perhaps we dreamed too much and were a bit disappointed in the weather and the relatively poor snorkeling. Another factor was the seemingly large increase in people and traffic since just a year ago. We did get to see new sights and experience new things, so the trip was fun and the food was great! We’ve decided, though, that we’ll not repeat an adventure again as that might bring bad ju ju. We are very thankful, however, that we are able to travel and enjoy each other’s company.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/last-day.jpg</image:loc><image:title>last day</image:title><image:caption>The surf was up during our last day, so it was probably a good thing the trip was at an end. As we left the restaurant, we saw this egret that Jerri named George. He was walking along a row of plants and every so often would sort of wave his neck in a sort of hypnotizing manner. We found out he was hunting for lizards (probably geckos).</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/jacks.jpg</image:loc><image:title>jacks</image:title><image:caption>Some jacks (ulua) with what I believe is a variety of black tang. Paul was explaining all this to us when another boat tour walked through our group on their way to the end of the slot canyon we were in. Paul told us, “You are now at a revival.” He began quoting many scriptures and we were hollering “Amen, Brother” while the people walked through in a timid way As soon as the folks passed by, Paul immediately went back to his talk and never missed a beat. He is an amazing man who is world renown in geologic circles and can quote Shakespeare at length as well as the Bible and other literary masterpieces at will.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/unconformityspan.jpg</image:loc><image:title>unconformityspan</image:title><image:caption>Then we got to the Great Unconformity. They were here last year, too. i don't know if they are resting while on migration or they just decided to come here for a couple weeks before they move to a breeding ground. I heard a canyon wren yesterday and is exciting to me. I've never seen one, but I know the call. Soon I'll see tiny puff balls scurrying with their quail parents. Spring is truly a delightful time that brings all kinds of diversions and activities.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/images.jpg</image:loc><image:title>images</image:title><image:caption>Red-winged blackbirds have also arrived. What is this? Actually, ravens don't normally hang on as woodpeckers do. But if they are hungry enough and like the food, they will try anything. Then, too, their beaks are thick and it's difficult for them to get through the smaller mesh in the suet feeder. They keep trying and eventually do get a few bites. Starlings do better at this same trick because their beaks are smaller.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/go.jpg</image:loc><image:title>go</image:title><image:caption>Attacking the suet</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/set.jpg</image:loc><image:title>set</image:title><image:caption>Go!</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/ready.jpg</image:loc><image:title>ready</image:title><image:caption>Ready... Bia’s energy is boundless and wants to play with every dog or critter she finds. Her tail is like a whip with no nerves. It whacks anything nearby (your leg, a wall, a tree, ad infinitum) and seems to feel no effect. But your leg does! She is so happy to see you and practically wags her fanny off trying to greet you.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/max-scratch.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Max scratch</image:title><image:caption>When Max needs to take care of an itch, everyone knows it. His tags rattle and a big foot goes after that itch with a great production. You should see when he cleans his feet. It's a weird sound.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/bud-cave.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Bud cave</image:title><image:caption>Sometimes Buddy gets into a small place where Max can’t bug him. I’m already looking forward to going there next year…especially to be with the family.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/zpt-reflect.jpg</image:loc><image:title>zpt. reflect</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/z-pt-reflect.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Z pt.reflect</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/z-ptmk.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Z ptMK</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/z-pt-km.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Z pt.K&amp;M</image:title><image:caption>
The kids like to hike around the area and Megan and Kylie zipped out to an area in front of the actual Zabriskie Point. Dalan went out to points unknown to take pictures.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/zpt-raven.jpg</image:loc><image:title>zpt-raven</image:title><image:caption>The next late afternoon, we went to Zabriskie Point to see colors and maybe a sunset. The reflected colors are beautiful and I enjoy going there to see all the people as well as the sights. There is a large raven in this photo. See if you can spot it.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/sunset-reflect.jpg</image:loc><image:title>sunset reflect</image:title><image:caption>The sunset wasn’t very spectacular but the setting sun’s reflection creates some pretty colors as people come back across the dunes to get to their cars.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/bug.jpg</image:loc><image:title>bug</image:title><image:caption>It was pretty easy to follow the tracks and discovered this large stinkbug hustling across the sand to another plant so as to have some shelter.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/bug-tracks.jpg</image:loc><image:title>bug tracks</image:title><image:caption>I espied these tracks and then wondered what made them.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/jjdunes.jpg</image:loc><image:title>J&amp;Jdunes</image:title><image:caption>Jerri and Jolee</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2018-03-01T11:17:23+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/2018/01/19/ag-birds-and-critters-in-carson-valley-january-2018/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/img_5519-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Sierras1/19/2018</image:title><image:caption>We had pretty good winds yesterday, topping 50 mph and 70 near Lake Tahoe. The mountains got some snow and we got a spritz. It was snowing a tad when I went to the gym this morning, but nothing stuck. This was the scene looking west this morning. The mountains look so close but the foothills are actually 6 or more miles away. I never tire of this view.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/coop.jpg</image:loc><image:title>coop</image:title><image:caption>Several varieties of hawks fly over my feeding area for smaller birds. Sometimes they are successful. I don’t like to see it happen, but realize that these critters are doing what comes naturally.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/coopers.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Cooper's</image:title><image:caption>As you can see, life goes on in the Carson Valley with a lot of birthin’ and, sometimes the opposite. I came home a couple of days ago and looked out in back to see this Cooper’s hawk with a kill. I took a bunch of pictures and then did some other tasks. When I looked out about half an hour later, there was nothing left on the ground except feathers. I don’t know if he ate it all or flew away with part of it.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/mama.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Mama</image:title><image:caption>Three days later I stopped by the Settlemeyer Ranch again to see what was happening. More babies had been born. The cow lying down with the babies had given birth maybe the day before, as her baby was quite small.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/waitin-for-godot.jpg</image:loc><image:title>waitin' for Godot</image:title><image:caption>On the way out of the Dangberg Home Ranch, I was met by these two ladies that might have been waiting for a ride, for Godot or who knows? These cattle are Park Ranch cows and have not calved yet. They will in another week or so.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/prairiefalcon.jpg</image:loc><image:title>prairiefalcon</image:title><image:caption>While at the Dangberg, I met another local photo guru who told me this is a prairie falcon. I love meeting these guys, as they aren’t shy about sharing their knowledge of birds and photography.

No eagles did I see this year, but i did see what I think is a female Northern harrier, another raptor.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/snow-deer.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Snow deer</image:title><image:caption>Did you notice how dry it is? No snow in the valley so far this winter and it’s a bummer. It is housed in pre-WWII aircraft hangars and displays aircraft from WWII on. The lobby floor is very unique in that it is an aerial photo of Pearl Harbor as it is today. It is tiled but you can hardly see the seams. This portion is looking down on the USS Missouri, the Arizona Memorial and the two white spots above the Arizona mark where the USS Nevada was moored.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/end-of-war.jpg</image:loc><image:title>end of war</image:title><image:caption>Perhaps the most famous photo of the end of WWII.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/flags-on-mo.jpg</image:loc><image:title>flags on MO</image:title><image:caption>We were able to tour a good part of the Missouri above and below deck. It was like a confusing city below deck where the men slept, ate, went to the dentist, saw the doctor, wrote letters and lived their lives. We were glad to get back to the main deck away from (again) those tight quarters.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/img_0337.jpg</image:loc><image:title>IMG_0337</image:title><image:caption>The exact spot on the USS Missouri deck where the instrument of formal surrender of Japan was signed to bring a close to WWII.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/guns.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Guns</image:title><image:caption>We are on board the USS Missouri. I think this is a unique and poignant memorial for the 429 men lost on that fateful day.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://buzzardnotes.blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/moa.jpg</image:loc><image:title>moa</image:title><image:caption>As we were leaving Valor in the Pacific Monument, Jerri spotted this moa (a feral chicken).
